Police have confirmed an officer has died after he was shot by robbers at Ayirebikrom near Manso-Nkwanta in the Ashanti Region.
The incident, which happened Wednesday morning, involved a Sprinter Benz Bus with registration number AC 644-15 with passengers on board including the slain officer and one other who was treated and discharged.
Addressing journalists on Thursday, July 12, Ashanti Regional Police Commander, DCOP Kwasi Mensah Duku said the sprinter bus was from Kumpese junction heading towards Kumasi when the eight gun-wielding men attacked the passengers on board.
Amid firing the two police officers and four passengers sustained gunshot wounds and were rushed to the St. Martin’s Hospital for treatment.
“In the process the two police officers were shot and their AK 47 rifles were seized from them with the deceased police officer sustaining gunshot wounds in the abdomen”, the Regional Commander explained.
According to DCOP Duku, police upon intelligence and information proceeded to Dome-Beposo, a village near Manso-Nkwanta where four AK 47 rifles including those seized from the two police officers by the robbers were retrieved.
Other items included a G3 and SMG assault rifles, a pump action gun, seven boxes of ammunition, 88 pieces of AK 47 ammunition and some clothes.
Police have since begun investigations and is urging the public to volunteer information that will lead to the arrest of the suspects.
