Alliance for Social Equity and Public Accountability (ASEPA) says it will on Friday, January 11, petition the CID, National Security and the BNI for an independent probe into allegations suggesting that the Chief Executive Officer of defunct MENZGOLD Ghana Limited, Nana Appiah Mensah financed the 2016 campaign of candidate Nana Akuffo-Addo.

Nana Appiah Mensah was declared wanted on Wednesday, January 9 by the CID after it had secured a warrant from an Accra Circuit Court for the former’s arrest and two other directors of his company. Since news of the warrant secured for the arrest of the MENZGOLD CEO and his wife broke, it has sparked nationwide debate. While a section of the public say it is a great relief to aggrieved MENZGOLD customers, critics have described it as a smokescreen because it came too late.

Mensah Thompson, Executive Director for ASEPA.

Critics say government, which has publicly described the victims of the scam as greedy and has also vowed not to use the tax payers’ money to pay back their deposit is now bowing to pressure because of the series of protests which is making it unpopular.

The bench warrant for the arrest of the MENZGOLD CEO popularly known as NAM1 came after President Akufo Addo’s nephew and close confidant, Gabby Asare Otchere Darko suggested in a facebook post that Nana Appiah Mensah had already absconded to South Africa through Togo and Nigeria. Later, news went round that the Police CID Boss, COP Maame Yaa Tiwaa Addo Danquah had denied knowledge of any investigation or the jumping of bail by Nana Appiah Mensah.

But that was later denied as information gathered by indicated that the Police CID was liaising with over 190 INTERPOL agencies to arrest NAM1 wherever he may be.

Speaking exclusively to Radio XYZ 93.1 on Thursday, Executive Director of ASEPA, Mensah Thomson disclosed that intelligence gathered shows NAM1 may have sponsored President Akuffo-Addo’s  2016 campaign and thus demands an investigation to establish the truth or otherwise of the issue. ‘’But for now, it remains just an allegation’’ he was quick to add.

According to Mr Thompson, ASEPA demands an independent probe into allegations that:

(a) NAM1 funded the campaign of Nana Akuffo in the 2016 election and

(b) NAM 1 is a holder of a diplomatic passport.

He observed that ‘’If we will bring finality and closure to this MENZGOLD saga, then the people of Ghana must know whether Nana Appiah Mensah was a holder of a diplomatic passport, how he acquired the passport, who gave him the passport and on what basis was he given the passport.’’

Asked what it will mean if investigations indicts the President he explains that ‘’If he sponsored the NPP obviously then it means, based on happenings in this country now, that he used depositors funds to finance the NPP, now that is criminal………..what I’m saying borders on whether the President of this country is going to remain in this country or not.’’
