Bantama Gang Rape: 4 Juveniles Locked 36 Months

A Kumasi District Magistrate Court on Wednesday, June 20, sentenced the four other suspects involved in a sexual assault case at Bantama in the Ashanti regional capital in December 2017.

The four who allegedly gang-raped the teenager are to serve their 36 month sentence at a Senior Correctional Center at Mamobi in Accra.

The four who are minors and students in some junior and senior high schools in Kumasi had been referred to a District Court for sentencing.

All the actors were found guilty of conspiracy to commit defilement and defilement.

A Social Welfare Inquiry report had recommended a 12 month jail term for the fifth convict, who was found guilty of an additional charge of aiding and abetting for filming the incident, but that was shot down by the court presided over by Her Worship Christina Cann.

Relatives of the convicts could not hide their tears after court proceedings which was held in camera.

Counsel for the convicts, Lawyer Yahaya Seidu, who was unhappy with the development told XYZ News’ Jonathan Ofori the ruling was “harsh” adding, his outfit may initiate processes to appeal against the judgement after consulting their(the juveniles’) parents.

Earlier this month, one of the convicts, 20-year-old, Ernest Asare, was sentenced to 7 years in prison with hard labour.

He is the oldest of five actors arrested in December 2017 after a video of a teen being gang-raped went viral on social media.
