Director of NLA Crucified Over Corruption

An anti corrupt civil society group, Concerned Voters’ Movement (CVM) has vowed to get, the Director General of the National Lotteries Authority(NLA) and former member of Parliament for Asuogyamang in the Eastern Region, Kofi Osei Ameyaw, investigated and subsequently, ousted for what they described as gross mismanagement and abuse of power.

Addressing a news conference in Accra, the Founder and President of the Concerned Voters’ Movement, Razak Kojo-Poku, said his outfit has gathered the needed information and will soon proceed to the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO).

According to him, the Lotto and Lotteries Authority Bill, 2017 sent to parliament by the NLA Director seeking the scraping of Gaming Commission and Veterans Administration of Ghana, without the approval of the board and the Presidency is unwise.

He indicated that it is a “clear case of gross insubordination to the authority that appointed Kofi Osei Ameyaw as Director-General”.

Mr Kojo-Opoku described the Director as lazy and intellectually incompetent. “The Lotto and Lotteries Authority Bill he submitted to parliament was just the fusion of National Lotto Act, 2006, Gaming Act 2006, and the Veterans Administration, Ghana Act 2012.

“Kofi Osei Ameyaw has no legal rights to plagiarize the working documents of these institutions”, he stated urging the institutions to go to court and seek clarity over plagiarism on the part of the NLA Boss.

“This action by Kofi Osei Ameyaw, to ambush the Gaming Commission and Veterans Administration, Ghana, is criminal and i respectfully, encourage the two institutions to take legal actions against the Director-General”.

The Founder and President of CVM, also hinted that, Mr. Kofi Osei Ameyaw and David Lamptey who is the Acting Director in charge of Legal Affairs at the NLA and Merlin Gaming Ghana, conspired to defraud the state to a tune of 15,000,000 as settlement of legal claims.

Mr. Kojo-Poku, rhetorically, questioned why the Board Members of the National Lotteries Authority allowed Mr. Osei Ameyaw to transfer the net balance from the Lotto Account into unauthorized private accounts without approval of the board.

Adding, the 30,000 Lotto Kiosks proposed by Mr. Osei Ameyaw, was not authorized by the Public Procurement Authority, which allegedly, cost $4,000.

The CVM also suspected that the NLA Director’s travel to the United States could be for personal interest as he took $40,000 as allowance.

According to CVM and its President, they driven by passion to ensuring that President Akufo-Addo, succeed.

He said: “the President has the opportunity to correct the errors of the past and amend the monopoly of NLA as a means of creating an enabling environment for private sector participation in lottery business”.

The CVM dared Mr. Kofi Osei Ameyaw to respond to the issues raised against him, however, the Director of NLA is yet to comment on the allegations.
