Two armed robbers are in Police grips after a shootout in a foiled highway robbery near Asaase on the Otorkpolu to Odumase highway in the Eastern region.
The robbers reportedly fired first at a Police – Military patrol team who chanced on them during an attack traders on the in the Lower Manya Krobo Municipality of the Eastern region.
The incident according to witnesses happened on Tuesday dawn when the six robbers ambushed the vehicles.
XYZ News has gathered that a Police officer was shot during the exchange of gunfire between the police and robbers. This was after one of the armed men managed to overpower the military personnel and took away their rifles.
A reinforcement team of heavily armed military personnel was subsequently dispatched from Michel Camp to comb the area and pursue the armed men.
The six, reportedly took the patrol team by surprise and seized two fully loaded G3 riffles belonging to two officers identified as Lance Corporal Wonder Agbanya and one private Brempong of the 1BN who were Forestry patrol duties at Asitey Mountains in the Eastern Region, MyNewsGh.com has confirmed.
One Sergeant Daniel Akamaro of Regional SWAT Unit of the Ghana Police Service from Koforidua who was among the attacked security officers sustained head injuries but has been treated and discharged.
Rumours are rife the suspects could be Fulani men. According to them, the armed robbers took their two G3 riffles away together with the AK47 rifle plus 24 rounds of ammunitions were accosted later and weapons retrieved.
Meanwhile, Doku Abraham aged 40 a petrol tanker driver in charge DAF petrol tanker with registration Number GT 8420-W and two other drivers who were victims of robbery gang have lodged an official complaint with the police.
They were travelling from Odumase-Krobo and Somanya respectively with passengers on board one of the vehicles to Akateng village near Asesewa but on reaching a section of the road at Asitey Mountains on the Asesewa motor road, they were attacked by the 6 armed men who robbed them of their belongings including various sums of money.
The military is still in the Odumase Krobo community searching for the remaining four gunmen while the injured police officer is receiving treatment at a local hospital in the area.
Police indicate that the security men combed the bush and arrested suspect another Haruna Asor and also retrieved the two G3 riffles and it’s ammunition, a cash of GH¢ 1,958.70p from both suspects suspected to be for the victims.
Elsewhere in the Northern region, three police officers who were deployed for Operation Calm-Life snap-check in Kakpayili, a suburb of Tamale have also been attacked and their weapons seized by armed men suspected to be robbers last Sunday.
The officers have been identified as Samuel Yeboah, Detornu Brigitte and Maduku Amoh.
According to reports, the attackers, numbering three, stormed the checkpoint and opened fire at the officers and seized two AK 47 guns fully loaded with 20 rounds of ammunition each.
Reports revealed by the Police suggest the gunmen fled with the weapons, leaving bruises on the police officers.
Three empty shells suspected to be that of Sub Machine Gun (SMG) were retrieved after the matter was reported to the regional headquarters.
