Police in the Ashanti Region has commenced investigations into the killing of a suspected illegal miner at Anyimadu, near Obuasi in the Ashanti Region following a clash between some of them and the Anti-galamsey Taskforce, Chairman of the Ashanti Regional Security Council, Hon Simon Osei Mensah has said.
Thirty-one-year-old, Kwabena Agyemang, a father of one, was hit last weekend as the armed patrol team clashed with stone-pelting illegal miners according to Major Gariba Pabi, Public Relations Officer of the Anti-Galamsey Taskforce has stated.
Relatives and some residents of the area have debunked claims he was killed in a fierce gun battle and are demanding a withdrawal of the taskforce.
“We are investigating whether it is true that some people also gave some shots and whether it was those shootings they heard that killed the man or it was the warning shots from the taskforce that killed him, we are also investigating this one. Meanwhile, we wish to express our condolences with the bereaved family”, Hon Simon Osei Mensah addressed journalists after a Regional Security Council meeting on Tuesday August 8,2017 assuring that residents should not live in fear and are to go on with their normal duties.
“We’ve heard that some of the Galamsey people are saying they will resist any effort by the taskforce. If you do that then it means you want to engage them and anything at all can happen. These are armed personnel who are trained in shooting and if you want to engage them in arms then the consequences will be bad. So they should desist from that and comply with government directives” he cautioned.
