Personnel of the Joint Taskforce of Operation Vanguard have visited the spot where the gruesome murder of late Major Maxwell Mahama took place in Denkyira Obuasi.
At the spot where Major Mahama gave his last breath, Operation Vanguard personnel, led by the Joint Taskforce Commander Colonel William Agyapong, said prayers and thanked the Almighty for His mercies and protection that has seen the group through two months without any casualty.
After prayers at the scene, some Vanguard personnel commented that, they came to the Operation with the mindset to work very hard in order to ensure that “Mahama’s death” was not in vain.
Operation Vanguard was commissioned by the President of Ghana on the 31st of August 2017 to enforce the ban on illegal and small scale mining across the country, starting from the Eastern, Western and the Ashanti Regions.
“Since the launch, the Joint Taskforce has been able to arrest 362 suspected Illegal miners and seized a number of equipment including over 1500 Chanfan platforms, water pumps and some mining equipments. So far 24 numbers of suspected illegal miners including some Chinese have been convicted for Illegal mining activities and fined ranging from GHC 1080 to GHC 6000 and imprisonment ranging from four months to 18 months”, Public Relations Officer of Operation Vanguard, Major Gariba Pabi said.
He said the activities of Operation Vanguard have led to a positive change where major water bodies are now clear to serve as drinking water to many communities.
The Chief of the Nsein Traditional Area, Awulai Agyefi Kwame II attested to this in his speech at this year’s Kundum Festival on the 24 September 2017 when he commended the efforts of the government in the fight against illegal mining in the country which has the condition of water bodies in the Nsein Traditional Area.
The Operation Vanguard team expressed happiness at the successes achieved within the last two months and urged all citizens of the country to always say no to mob action.
