A Kumasi-based pastor who lost his pregnant wife and their unborn child at the Suntreso Government Hospital in the Ashanti Regional capital is threatening to sue the management of the health facility for negligence.
The deceased, 30-year-old Angela Afriyie Agyemang died with her unborn baby at the hospital on Wednesday July 4, 2018 after the facility refused her entry into the labour ward because her husband could not pay a sum of 500 cedis ‘Doctor Motivation Fee’ on the spot.
Angela, who was suffering from life-threatening conditions, later died at the theatre moments after her husband had made available the fee for which she had been denied medical attention at the hospital.
Narrating his ordeal to XYZ News’ Ashanti regional correspondent, Jonathan Ofori, Pastor Solomon Lamour-Lateef Agyemang said one Doctor Sarpong he bargained with did felt reluctant to help his wife.
“She was delayed…For about two and half hours all they were telling me was they are cleaning a bed. They [nurses] said they had only one bed,” he said as he blamed the health workers for neglecting her wife. “I couldn’t withhold the emotional pain my wife was going through.”
The aggrieved widower is however calling on President Akufo-Addo and the Minister of Health, Hon. Kwaku Agyeman Manu, to help him seek justice.
“…I believe even if my wife was taken into the theatre 30 minutes before the time they took her there she would have survived,” he recounted how his wife died few minutes after Angela was taken to the theatre.
Meanwhile, authorities of the hospital are yet to make an official statement on the matter.
Families, relatives and church members had thronged the couple’s Krofrom residence to sympathize with him at the time XYZ News visited.
A similar incident occurred after a couple lost their twin babies at the Tema General Hospital in 2010, as a result of alleged medical negligence.
According to the couple, the hospital had failed to provide convincing answers on what caused the death of the babies more than seven years after the unfortunate incident.
Father of the babies, Amankwah Addo, had threatened to sue the Hospital and the Ministry of Health if their concerns are not addressed.
