Intensify Sex Education In Schools- MP Francisca Oteng To GES

The Member of Parliament for Kwabre East Constituency in the Ashanti Region, Hon Francisca Oteng, has urged the Ghana Education Service to intensify education on sexual reproductive health rights to empower young girls to access reproductive rights without fear of being ridiculed.

She said sex education must include accurate information on a range of age-appropriate topics that should be participatory to foster knowledge, attitudes, values and practical skills to enable adolescents to develop positive views of their sexuality.

“Most schools in other jurisdictions have intensified sex education to prevent the increasing rate of sexually transmitted infections and unwanted pregnancies. It is high time the Ghana Education Service included that in our curriculum. Most of our young people particularly young girls become school drop outs as a result of unwanted pregnancies and we need to consider sex education in our school setting to protect the future of our young girls”, the legislator stated during a tour of her constituency on Tuesday, September 19.

The MP also called on parents to focus their attention on the education of their children. She said the only legacy parents could bequeath to their children in is education since any property could not effectively or personally help them.

“Government’s flagship “Free Senior High School(Free SHS)” Policy is to help young people access quality education so I urge parents to take advantage of that by encouraging their wards to learn harder, the MP stated, adding, her outfit together with the District Assembly “will come out with some modalities to check truancy and other social vices that cripple the academic work of school children in various communities in the constituency”.
