The Local Government Minister has denied media reports that all 26 Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies in the Northern Region have been levied 5,000 cedis to facilitate the President’s working visit there later this week.
A leaked circular dated September 29 and signed by the Regional Minister, which went viral on social media showed a signed notice asking all MMDCEs to comply with immediate effect.
The Regional Coordinating Council has already said in a radio interview that they will investigate how the letter leaked.
However, a Deputy Local Government Minister, Osei Bonsu Amoah told XYZ News the sector ministry did not sanction that letter requesting the assemblies to pay as that is not the practice.
He said: “the letter is not coming from the ministry, because the ministry was not copied. so at the time the letter came out the ministry was not aware of it. From the letter, the impression we get is that it is the RCC which is asking the assemblies to contribute and we are saying that we have not sanctioned that arrangement and we will not endorse it. No payment has been made and no payment will be made towards it.”
