Ghanaian Referee David Laryea Under Investigation For Embezzlement

The FIFA referee is being investigated by the Chief Justice, Ms Justice Sophia Akuffo, who has dispatched three top auditors from the Judicial Service to probe embezzlement at the Adjabeng District Magistrate Court in Accra, while calls for the interdiction of the two accused registrars intensify.for embezzlement of court fines.

The Chief Justice Madam Gloria Akuffo has therefore mandated three top auditors from the Judicial Service to probe the embezzlement.

The team, led by the Head of the Non-Tax Revenue Unit of the Judicial Service, Mr Eric Boamah, stormed the Adjabeng Court last week to collect receipt books covering fees and fines for verification.

Laryea, who is a Registrar of the Adjabeng District Magistrate Court in Accra, together with Mrs Patience Nai, a High Court Registrar, have for many months, allegedly diverted and pocketed unspecified sums of monies in court fines and fees.

The experienced FIFA referee was assistant to banned referee Joseph Lamptey in the infamous South Africa vs Senegal 2018 World Cup qualifier which was later replayed.

A three-month investigation undertaken by the Daily Graphic established that conviction to a fine of GH¢2,400 in the case of the Republic v. Eric Duah, paid by the convict on May 17, 2017, was diverted and embezzled by the two cashiers.

Investigations instituted by the audit team established by the Chief Justice would take a month to complete.
