Tamale Military-Police Clash: Cops Want Police Commander Transferred

There is growing agitation among junior Police officers in the Northern regional capital,Tamale, who are demanding the immediate transfer of their Regional Commander, DCOP Patrick Adusei Sarpong.

The anger is arising from the manner in which Police officers on duty were attacked by soldiers, who went on rampage over the arrest of their colleague by some police officials.

XYZ News sources indicate that the police officers are not happy with how the issue was initially handled by their commander.

It is not clear if the tension is a result of their prevention to fight back as they had claimed when their colleagues were attacked on Wednesday.

This morning the Inspector General of Police, David Asante-Apeatu, Defense Minister, Domnic Nitiwul and the Interior Minister, Ambrose Dery dashed to Tamale to have a crisis meeting at the tamale Barracks following the attack that resulted in injuring six (6) police officers.

It is not clear what the outcome of the meeting will be, but sources from the police indicate that the junior officers have lost confidence in DCOP Sarpong who was transferred to lead the police force in the region recently.

There was growing fears among residents in the Tamale Metropolis hours after the attack when the police abandoned their duty posts.

However, the Northern regional Minister, Salifu Saeed, who briefed the media after a crunch meeting last night has indicated that Tamale is safe.

“Tamale is safe even though the police and the military did not conduct themselves well, in terms of security residents should be rest assured there is security,” he confirmed.
