Some three persons have lost their lives while many have been injured after a fuel tanker exploded at Onyina Nufu in the Ahafo Ano South West District of the Ashanti Region.
About 13 compound houses in the community close to the explosion scene were also torched in the accident, rendering hundreds of residents homeless.
The deceased include the tanker driver and his mate and a one-and-a-half-year-old toddler, Kofi Poku, who was sleeping in one of the burnt houses.
The accident occurred around 1:30 pm today, Monday, 24 May 2021, when the fuel tanker, which was heading from Kumasi to Tepa, collided head-on with a parked sprinter bus and careered across the road into the community.
It disconnected high tension wires before toppling over and exploding.
About half of the households in the small community were burnt by the explosive blaze.
The Tepa Municipal Fire Commander, ADOI Wikana Badoming, said they had information about the accident and rushed to the scene to put the blaze under control.
The Director-General of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), Mr Eric Nana Agyemang Prempeh, who visited the fire scene, described the incident as a sad event.
He said the District Chief Executive for the area was looking for a temporary place to accommodate the displaced victims.
Nana Agyemang said NADMO will be re-visiting the community tomorrow, Tuesday, 25 May 2021, to go to the aid of the affected residents with relief items.
