As party front split over attempts to manipulate the election process
The polling station elections of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Akuappem South Constituency of the Eastern Region has been fraught with allegations of bias and unconstitutional tactics by the sitting Member of Parliament, OB Amoah, to hijack the elections to his favour.
The Akuapem South MP, who has spent four terms in office, according to the aggrieved NPP members is bent on removing all the incumbent polling station executives who he deemed to be a threat to his ambition to seek a fifth term in Parliament.
As a result, he is said to have hatched a plan to only retain those he can manipulate while also accused of not wanting to work with any constituency chairman for more than one term.
According to one of the aggrieved Party members, Matthew Baiden, who earlier petitioned Constituency executives concerning the alleged unfair practices adopted by the MP over the polling station elections, further alleged that plans are in place to remove the current Constituency chairman.
“There are plans already to remove the current chairman, Michael Ahwireng and replace him with his aide, Eric Appeadu. He has decided to use all foul means/intimidations to do away with the current polling station executives first,” he alleged.
In the dismissed petition to the constituency Party executives, the aggrieved demanded fairness for all interested party members in the contest of the newly created polling stations.
They also asked that the elections be conducted per the Party’s polling stations’ election guidelines.
“Under no circumstances should such positions be allocated to some without going through democratic elections at the polling stations. We will not allow that,” the petitioners stated.
They also asked that the time and venue for the polling station elections must be clearly stated and attached to the election itinerary.
Furthermore, it is alleged that all the people assisting in the electioneering process are his supporters who try to pad the ballot papers in favour of his people contesting for the election.
“OB AMOAH has severally breached the NPP guidelines for the conduct of the polling station election. He has single-handedly filled his people numbering 65 in the newly created polling stations. He has also filled all the vacancies at the various polling stations and also singled out some polling stations to go unopposed,” the aggrieved members alleged.
The other petitioners are Frank Amankwa, Polling Station Chairman, Adarkwa Nana Kwadwo, Polling Station Executive and Osae Toah Obed, also a Polling Station Executive.
The rest are Amponsah Yaw Ayisi, Polling Station Executive, Michael Opoku, Polling Station Executive, Godwin Gagah Agbeko, Polling Station Executive, Agei Isaac, Polling Station Executive and Benjamin Nii Kwatei Quartey, also a Polling Station Executive.
