Residents in the Bibiani-Anhwiaso-Bekwai constituency in the Western North Region have appealed to President Nana Akufo-Addo and the appointing authority within the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) to consider their MP, Alfred Obeng-Boateng and hand him a ministerial position.
The youth, who have disclosed to the press that they have the backing of some chiefs of the area, say the former Managing Director of the Bulk Oil Storage and Transportation Company Limited (BOST) maximized the fortunes of the NPP in the 2020 elections and deserves to be honoured.
The youth and some members of the opposition NDC have touted the achievements of Mr Obeng-Boateng in the area, saying he is accessible to the people and has been financing the NPP at different levels in the region attributing his benevolence to the defeat of the NDC candidate in the area.
Speaking on Power FM news Thursday night, a leader of the group, Joseph Amande who is also an NPP activist in the area disclosed that all the chiefs in the area are waiting to applaud President Akufo-Addo when he appoints their son for a ministerial position.
“See, we have NDC members who believe Mr Alfred Obeng-Boateng deserves a ministerial position and they have all joined us to plead with the appointing authority in the NPP,” Amande told Piesie Okrah and hinted that his elevation will help consolidate the gains of the NPP in the area.
“The youth are a bit disappointed because he [Obeng-Boateng] wasn’t given a cabinet ministerial potfolio. It is this same man that is calming them. We ehen our appeal is granted, the NPP can capture this constituency for long because the MP can help the deprived in the less endowed areas immensely.
“Alfred Obeng-Boateng has been helping the poor in rural areas providing water and supporting less-endowed parents cater for their children in second cycle andtertiary institutions. I have been facilitating some of the processes and I know what I am talking about. The man needs to be elevated so the NPP can capture this seat like Bantama,” Amande stated.
Alfred Obeng-Boateng of NPP beat Stephen Donkor of NDC with a difference of 17,591 votes in December’s polls, thereby winning with the biggest margin in the region.
He raised the NPP’s parliamentary votes differnce from 3200 votes as obtained by Kingsley Aboagye-Gyedu who beat Kofi Armah of the NDC in 2016.
“He was the NPP candidate whose vote margin in the 2020 polls was the third highest in the country. We are even looking at widening the gap to about 25,000 votes difference in 2024” Amande disclosed and rallied for his MP to be awarded with a top position in the Akufo-Addo administration.
To him, when Obeng Boateng is promoted in the NPP government, most NDC supporters will swing to NPP ahead of the 2024 polls.
He said the group and the Chiefs of the area are willing to petition the authorities over their concerns, hinting they will go any length to make sure Mr Obeng-Boateng is duly recognized for his hard work.
