Bawku Violence: Conference of Basic school heads demand closure

The Conference of Heads of Basic Schools (CHOBS) is demanding the immediate closure of all basic schools within the Bawku Municipality. This follows security concerns over the renewed Chieftaincy clashes which have left at least nine dead since Sunday.

An official notice signed by its Chairman, Abugri Busia to the Municipal Director of Education and copied to the Municipal Chief Executive and the three major teacher unions in the district, GNAT,NAGRAT and CCT-Ghana cited safety concerns.

‘The lives of our pupils and teachers cannot be guaranteed at this time’ ..she emphasized.
The letter further read….“Following the insecurity and the subsequent ban of “yellow yellow” in the municipality, we wish to appeal to you to close down basic schools in the municipality pending the improvement of the security situation,”

Last Monday, the Regional Security Council at its emergency meeting resolved to temporarily ban ‘yellow, yellow’ operations until further notice.

It also imposed curfew hours to cover Nayoka, Kpalgu and Manga communities.

A statement issued by the Council said that only the Police, Ghana Immigration Service, and the military would be allowed to use official motorbikes between the hours of 6 am and 6 pm.
The dusk to dawn curfew is in full force.

Meanwhile there are reports of relative calm after the reinforcement of Police and Military personnel.
