The Ghana Police Service has said Accra FM’s Kwabena Bobie Ansah was arrested for the publication of false news
“Mr Kwabena Bobbie Ansah of Accra FM was arrested yesterday, February 10, 2022, by the Accra Regional Police Command in connection with an alleged case of publication of false news and offensive conduct,” a statement from the Police said.
“His arrest became necessary after he turned down several invitations from the Police to him and others involved in the case to assist with investigation,” the statement clarified.
The broadcaster is currently at the Nima Police station in Accra.
Social media users, particularly members of the NDC have commenced a campaign dubbed #FreeBobie to get the police to release the vociferous broadcaster.
Meanwhile, Class Media Group has refuted claim that the host of the ‘Citizen Show’ was invited by the police.
Background
At about 10:10 PM Thursday, the men in uniform picked Bobie up at the entrance of Class Media Group (CMG) where he works, close sources said.
He had finished hosting his programme and was heading home, the source indicated and stated the armed men did not invade the premises.
“He was ambushed. We don’t know where he is being sent to,” he said.
Bobbie Ansah is believed to have been arrested for his criticisms against the Akufo-Addo government.
He is the third broadcaster to have been harassed by state security agencies in recent times.
Captain Smart of Onua TV and Power FM’s Oheneba Boamah Bennie have been recently encountered the police over their opposition to some government policies and harsh criticisms against the NPP Administration.
Oheneba Boamah Bennie was jailed on Tuesday following claims he made against President Akufo-Addo after the 2020 elections were declared.
Some human right advocates have condemned the use of state security to harass critical media outlets and journalists.
US-based Ghanaian law professor, Kwaku Asare has criticised such acts by the state, saying it breeds culture of silence.
