Media advocacy group, Free Media Vanguard has condemned threats on the life of a Multimedia Group journalist, Erastus Asare Donkor from Assin Central MP, Kennedy Agyapong.
The MP is reported to have called for Donkor, a journalist with Kumasi-based Luv FM, to be beaten mercilessly, adding that if he were the president of the country, he would have ensured that the pressman be severely lashed.
This is the second time the Legislator has incited the public against a media personnel.
Investigative journalist Ahmed Suale was shot dead by unknown assailants few weeks after the MP had called for him to be attacked.
It is for this reason that the FMV has called on the Speaker of Parliament, Rt Hon. Alban Bagbin to call him to order.
“Kennedy Agyapong’s comment is reminiscent of the incitement and threats against late investigative Journalist, Ahmed Hussein-Suale , who was assassinated shortly after in January 2019,” Convener of FMV, Prince Minkah said in a statement.
Below is the statement of FMV;
Enough! Bring Kennedy Agyapong to Order – Mr. Speaker, President
Free Media Vanguard has monitored closely with concern, threatening comments by the Member of Parliament for Assin Central, Kennedy Agyapong on the safety and life of Multimedia Journalist, Erastus Asare Donkor .
The MP, who is also Chairman of the Defence and Interior Committee of Parliament, is on record to have said …”we should beat the hell out of Erastus Asare Donkor”.
He added if he (Honourable Agyapong) “were the president of Ghana, he would have ensured that Erastus Asare Donkor is beaten mercilessly”. The Kumasi based journalist’s crime was the live coverage of the Ejura protests that turned bloody after military officers opened fire leaving two dead and four others injured.
Kennedy Agyapong’s comment is reminiscent of the incitement and threats against late investigative Journalist, Ahmed Hussein-Suale , who was assassinated shortly after in January 2019.
Free Media Vanguard is by this Statement condemning the penchant for threats and attacks on press freedom.
We call on the President of the republic, Nana Addo Danquah Akufo Addo to prove beyond every reasonable doubt that he is indeed a vanguard for Press freedom as suggested severally in his narratives to critics of his government.
We also appeal to the Speaker of parliament, Rt Hon Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin to launch an investigation into this matter head on, to demonstrate readiness by his office to bring MPs to order.
Free Media Vanguard will be petitioning the Speaker and the Presidency on this disturbing trend until we are assured of the full protection of Erastus Asare Donkor, whose work as a journalist or a story teller is of prime importance to every Ghanaian and the rest of the world.
