There is heavy Police-military presence at Chereponi to prevent another bloody clash following the enskinment of a Chief.
The latest tension has been triggered by the enskinment of one Alhaji Abubakari Awuful as Chief of the area.
The ceremony which received the blessing of Overlord of Dagbon, Yaa Naa Abukari Mahama II was in full breach of an earlier caution by the regional Security Council.
Reports indicate warriors of two Chokosi rival factions were provoked by the ceremony, resulting in a clash.
In such attacks, communities belonging to both Konkombas and Chokosis are burnt, animals are not spared and those who venture to visit their farms become easy targets.
Last week, the Interior Ministry again renewed the curfew hours for Chereponi township and its environs for another month from 10:00 pm to 4:00 am. This is in spite of heavy police-military deployment to the area to prevent reprisal attacks from prolonged Chieftaincy disputes.
In an iterview with TV XYZ News, the North East Regional Police Commander, DCOP Kwadwo Antwi Tabi, said they are prepared to maintain law and order.
“We are just beefing up the security there. From all indications, tension is rising so our men too are on the ground.” he said. ” We have about 80 police personnel on the ground now. We pray that we can maintain law and order.”
The timely deployment of additional military and Police personnel has prevented violent clashes but officials say the situation is still dire since the people cannot be predicted.
