Confusion rocks Ayawaso West Wuogon NPP; MP sacks MCE from party event

Member of Parliament (MP) for Ayawaso West Wuogon, Madam Lydia Seyram Alhassan has set the ruling NPP on fire in her constituency, sowing seed of discord among NPP members.

As the party calls for unity ahead of the December elections, Lydia Alhassan, who became a Parliamentarian after his husband who was the MP for the area died in 2018, has taken over the party in the constituency, disregarding directives from party executives.

Madam Alhassan on Wednesday, November 11,2020, shocked hundreds of party members when she sacked the Ayawaso West Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Mrs Sandra Owusu-Ahinkorah, from a programme organized by the party.

There was near fisticuffs between Madam Alhassan and the MCE at the event where Deputy Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Mr Godfred Yeboah Dame was donating motorbikes and other items to the party.

It is not clear what brought about the misunderstanding, but Madam Alhassan was seen giving a stern warning to Mrs Owusu-Ahinkorah who had arrived at the event to support the party.

Beaming with smiles as party members cheered her on, Madam Alhassan confronted the MCE and was seen throwing her hands  in the air with gestures that suggested that Madam Owusu-Ahinkorah was not welcomed at the programme.

This embarrassment meted out to the MCE brought the programme a halt as members who had thronged the scene  started to attack each other with abusive words before the Minister.

The MCE later left the scene unhurt but so troubled.

In an interview with some members of the NPP, the MP was fingered as the one creating cracks and disunity in the party ever since she was given the opportunity to lead the constituency.

Some Constituency Executives who spoke to the tnpnews on condition of anonymity for fear of being attacked and intimidated said the attitude of their candidate is giving the NDC the opportunity to snatch the seat from them.

“If this issue is not addressed as a matter of urgency, the elections will be won by the NDC,” he said and added that the MCE has a huge following and that can affect the fortunes of Lydia Alhassan.

He, therefore, called on the National Executives to settle the differences of the two women leading the party in the constituency before the polls else the NDC will snatch the seat from them.

It is believed Mrs Owusu-Ahinkorah is seen as a threat to Madam Alhassan who is seeking re-election after her electoral victory from the bloody Ayawaso West Wuogon by-elections on January 30,2019.

Efforts to get the MCE to get her side of the story has proved futile.

Meanwhile, most of the party members are advocating for a ‘skirt and blouse’ voting pattern ahead of the polls to pace way for the opposition candidate, John Dumelo, whose campaign message is stronger in the area.
