COVID19 Test charges is Illegal – Haruna Iddrisu

Parliament’s minority has described the $150 being paid for COVID-19 testing at Kotoka International Airport as unconstitutional.

The fee has not been authorized by Parliament in compliance with Ghanaian rules, according to the Minority Chief, Haruna Iddrisu.

Speaking to Parliament’s press on issues related to the management of the coronavirus pandemic, Haruna Iddrisu, the Minority Leader, called for transparency with regard to the usage of COVID-19 funds.

“Give us the legal basis for the charges in question. If there is something we have to do, it needs to be accompanied by legislation. It’s immoral because it’s exploitative.’

As this is a country ruled by statute, we are not a banana republic. Not only is it exploitative, but it is illegal, and we are asking that the money raised is put to what use. There is no government set up for profit, ”he said.

For a 30-minute PCR COVID-19 test conducted by Frontiers Health Care Limited, all passengers coming to Ghana by air are expected to pay $150 USD.

This started after the opening of Kotoka International Airport to international traffic on September 1 , 2020, after being closed due to a pandemic in March 2020.

The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has supported the test that is being used.

President Akufo-Addo has said that since September 1, 2020, over 30,000 individuals have so far been checked at Kotoka International Airport.

However, some people have expressed questions about the testing fees.
