A warrant has been issued by the Asokore Mampong Magistrate Court for the arrest of some 61 persons suspected to be involved in last week’s violence on the campus of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST).
Two people who ad already been arrested in connection with the incident, were denied bail by the court while three suspects are currently in Police custody.
The two suspects put before the Court include one Daniel Osei Bonsu, 25, a Mechanical Engineer and past student of KNUST and Francis Tutu Atuahene, a second-year student.
Head of Legal and Prosecution, Ashanti Regional Police Command, ACP Kofi Blagodzie, charged the suspects with conspiracy to commit crime, rioting with offensive weapons, causing unlawful damage and causing unlawful harm.
Lawyers for the two, William Asamoah Sarfo and Yaw Ababio, pleaded for their clients to be granted bail but the Court denied it.
The Court’s decision to refuse the bail was basically because of the rivalry among the student body, damage caused and injuries. Their safety could therefore not be guaranteed.
The Court believes the Police also acted in the confines of the law by presenting the suspects within forty-eight hours after arrest.
KNUST has also been able to identify eleven other suspects who are at large by their nicknames.
The two were remanded in Police custody to reappear on September 8.
