Despite introduced “Payola” in Ghana – Kaakyire Kwame Appiah

Legendary musician Kaakyire Kwame Appiah has asserted that multi millionaire Osei Kwame Despite introduced Payola in Ghana.

The term payola is a combination of “pay” and “ola”.

In the music industry, it’s the illegal practice of paying a DJ or radio or TV presenter to play a song without disclosing it to the station managers.

Speaking on Legends on TV XYZ,  the “Bronya’’ hit maker disclosed the practice of artistes giving money to  presenters and DJs to have their songs played on air was introduced in Ghana by the chief executive officer of the despite group of companies, Osei Kwame Despite.

“I’m telling you the gospel fact” Kaakyire replied

Explaining his encounter with Despite he said “I was recording my song 24 at the Ghana Films Studio with five engineers, then I went to Despite to get inlays for my new track and also to collect money he (Despite) owed me. After listening to the song He told me it was a good one and showed interest in doing business with me by being the main distributor,” he said.

 

“Nevetherless, my song made Despite start paying payola, he was just a distributor until we met and he decided to produce”.

Kaakyire Kwame Appiah is a musician, actor, and currently the Vice President of Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGA)
