‘Don’t take Lord Commey’s reckless comment lightly’ – Asafo Agyei cautions NDC

Deputy Communications Officer for the National Democratic Congress (NDC),  Kwaku Asafo Agyei,  has urged his party leaders to treat with all seriousness, the comments by the Director of Operations at the Presidency, Lord Commey, which suggests that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) is not ready to hand over power to any other party in 2024.

Commey who was addressing members of the NPP during the party’s Greater Accra Regional Delegates conference last week stated that they must do everything possible to retain power because the president, Nana Akufo-Addo wants to hand over power to an NPP government when leaving office in January 2025.

“If God blesses you with power and you don’t grab it well, you will regret what would happen to you…Break the 8 has become the slogan amongst us but so far as I live, I won’t break any eight (8)…The power I have, I would not hand it over today nor tomorrow,” Commey stated.

He added, “We have the power and what is left is for us to sustain the power. We have a president who now says I would hand over to the next NPP Presidential candidate as President of the Republic of Ghana.”

But speaking to Kwame Minkah on Tonton Sansan on TV XYZ, the tough-spoken Asafo Agyei condemned the comments from the NPP stalwart while indicating that the NPP has demonstrated over the years that they are violent, therefore, the comments from a topmost official at the seat of the president meant “the government is up to something fishy.”

Although he suggested that Lord Commey was not a man enough to be scared of, Asafo Agyei reminded the NDC leadership of some of the intimidating and bloody incidents that marred the 2020 elections, saying they must put measures in place to avert rigging in the 2024 elections.

“Lord Commey’s comment is a call for the NDC to wake up,” he said. “These guys [the NPP], I know them. Even former president Rawlings has said that they are dangerous.”

He said the comment could spark chaos in the country, stressing ” I am saying this because the constitution says we should resist the oppressor’s rule.”

“I would entreat the NDC not to take it lightly. Even if we can, we should go and get Captain Kodjo Tsikata because we also have the men. This is someone who was trained for war and even if it means we should go on our needs and get him back we should do,” Asafo Agyei added.

The NDC spokesman also urged the police to deal with persons that make such comments that inflame passions since they are supposed to work in the interest of the country and not the party in power.

“IGP Dampare, you’re young and can be in the office for long if you work well, but if you want to do the bidding of Nana Addo and Bawumia then it will not help you,” he concluded.
