The Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, has ordered the Forestry Commission to ban Akonta Mining Limited from gold mining within the Tano Nimiri Forest reserve in the Sameriboi area of the Amenfi West district.
The directive, which takes immediate effect, follows series of complaints and clashes.
According to a press release issued on Friday, 30th September, 2022, the company has no mandate to mine for gold in the forest.
This comes after a clash yesterday, 30th September 2022, between a section of the youth and the company which left two hospitalized from gun-shot wounds.
Two of the vehicles transporting the mining equipment were reportedly burnt while some vehicles belonging to timber firm Samartex had their windscreens smashed.
The clash follows deaf ears on series of complaints by Chiefs and the company over the past few months about the destruction of the forest cover and their source of livelihood.
