Food shortage to get worse – Peasant Farmers warn

Executive Director of the Ghana Peasant Farmers Association, Dr. Charles Kwowe Nyaaba, has charged government to take stringent measures to curb the worsening shortage of food in the country.

Speaking to host of Ideas Exchange, Eric Ahianyo on TV XYZ, Mr Nyaaba cautioned that failure on the part of government to take a drastic actions will only worsen the current situation.

Dr. Charles Nyaaba explained that the recent food shortage or price hikes situation is as a result of government’s own actions or policies it undertook in 2021.

He cited cost of production, government’s inability to pay fertilizer importers, and lack of soluble fertilizer in the market as the cause of Ghana’s food shortage.

“Government should try as much as possible to ensure that the commitment to soluble fertilizer actually come, payment to fertilizer importers come because as we speak, no company has received a pesewas for 2021 delivery. Government is still struggling to pay off those who delivered in 2020” the Executive Director said.

But the Agriculture minister Dr Owusu Afriyie Akoto in recent past described claims of food shortage as false and misleading.
