Galamsey fight: Gov’t deploys 200 Policemen to replace soldiers

Two hundred (200) Police personnel have been deployed to take over operations from the 200 military personnel deployed days ago to protect water bodies.

No reasons have been assigned for the decision to replace the 200 soldiers who were deployed on April 28, 2021 by the Government to flush out illegal miners around water bodies in the Central and Western regions.

The Police officers, who have just completed10-day redeployment training program on Mineral law, voluntary principles, human right, officer safety, weapon handling, use of minimum force are to move into action with immediate effect.

The new development comes amidst skepticism about the renewed pledge and assurance that this time, the exercise to stop the degradation of forests and water bodies will be successful.

Already the President has come under heavy criticism for stopping short of punishing his appointees who were caught on tape neck deep in galamsey and fears the use of soldiers again is a ruse. It follows concerns about several video footages which showed military officers have been complicit over the years guarding illegal concessions or compromising their mandate.

Officers deployed have been advised against compromising their roles and have been advised to exhibit professionalism at all levels and not to condone and connive in illegalities.
