The Ghana Education Service has ordered for the closure of Simms Senior High School at Fawoade, in the Kwabre East District of the Ashanti Region following student rioting over food.
Reports say some second and third year students questioned what they say is preferential dining hall treatment given to their first-year juniors on government’s Free Senior High School programme.
The rampaging students damaged public and private properties, including school furniture, electricity metres and cables as well as two staff cars.
Supper for second and third-year students was suspended Thursday because some of them were engaged in extra-curricular activities, authorities said on Thursday.
The students were, however, infuriated by the development and caused a commotion, forcing police intervention to bring the situation under control.
On Friday morning, however, violence erupted again.
It took personnel from the Kwabre East District Police command to maintain law and order in the school.
Meanwhile,District Chief Executive for Kwabre East, Nana Osei Assibey Bonsu, told journalists Friday that a committee will be established to investigate the issue.
