How Rawlings helped NPP’s Atta Akyea to win parliamentary primaries

The Member of Parliament (MP) for Abuakwa South and former Minister for Works and Housing, Samuel Atta Akyea, has revealed how former president JJ Rawlings helped him win parliamentary.

Its been one year since Rawlings, the founder of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), passed on. While the family of Rawlings and the NDC held a memorial service for the ex-military leader, Parliament also paid a glowing tribute to the former head of state.

According to Rawlings, the Professor had reneged on a promise to have him review and comment on the book titled: “JJ Rawlings and the Democratic Transition in Ghana,” before launching it.

Remembering his relationship with JJ Rawlings, the Abuakwa South MP recounted how he became a lawyer for the late President in a case at the Accra Fast Track High Court.

Rawlings and former Health Minister Kwaku Danso Boafo were settling a matter over the publication of a book the latter had published which Rawlings said he disagreed with. Atta Akyea said he offered to do the job for free.

Attah Akyea furthered that when he was going for his primaries, Rawlings came through for him by offering monetary support and his political blessings,

“I won a landslide victory.”Atta Akyea said.
