Keta MP visits communities affected by tidal waves; calls for Gov’t intervention

Member of Parliament for Keta, Mr. Kwame Dzudzorli Gakpey, has assured residents of his constituency who have been affected by the tidal waves of his commitment to help find a lasting solution to their predicament.

Residents of Kedzikope in the Keta Municipality were hit by tidal waves attack on Sunday dawn. Officials say some 1,200 persons were displaced while 500 houses were destroyed by the tidal waves.

The inhabitants are calling for government intervention although the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) have sent some relief items to them.

Earlier this week, some MPs appealed to the government to, as a matter of urgency, resource the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) to provide critical relief items to the affected residents who could be found in some three constituencies in the Volta Region.

NADMO is expected to put up temporary structures to accommodate displaced residents of Anloga District, Ketu South Municipality and Keta Municipality.

However, Mr Gakpey who spoke to was disappointed in the government for the delay in resettling some of the inhabitants who have been badly hit in the area.

He said although he has been to the area and has helped in his own way, it is the government that has the strength to protect the people.

He also hinted the MPs from the NDC side from the region would donate some more relief items and food to the affected communities during the weekend as they wait for the government’s intervention.
