Kumasi: Youth up in arms against Akufo-Addo over failed promises

A group known as the Asante Youth Association at Suame Magazine has accused the government of neglecting them in the share of the national cake.

The youth who are not happy with the tall list of failed promises from the Akufo-Addo government has since threatened to stage a demonstration over the lack of government’s commitment to commence the projects it promised them since 2016.

The group mainly pointed to the construction of an interchange to replace the Suame Roundabout in Kumasi in the Ashanti Region.

The group said the government has abandoned the campaign promise after winning power.

Addressing journalists’ spokesperson for the group, Isaac Nana Afreh questioned why other regions are seeing more development than others.

“If you are developing the Greater Accra and Easters regions and developing all the other regions you must also turn your eye to the Ashanti Region as well,” he said.

“We need our fair share of development. So we are sending this message to the President and the NPP government that we are giving them up by the end of this year. If we don’t see massive development in the Ashanti region we are going to advise ourselves.”

He further claimed that the region has not seen the construction of a single road and health facility since the NPP took over office.

“We (Ashanti region) also determine who wins elections in the country for that matter we demand our fair share of development in the country,” Nana Afreh added.

Government Response

In February this year, the Suame Municipal Chief Executive, Maxwell Ofosu Boakye, disclosed the construction of the Suame Interchange is scheduled to start in October this year.

He said the gopvernment had started a process of removing property sitting on demarcated areas for the interchange project.

“We would have to possess a site, which includes those who have built-in road reservations. So, we have to take possession of those sites. We have to start marking those areas.

“We have to make them aware to make them know they have to make way for the construction. So that will be happening in the next one and a half months,” said Mr Boakye.
