Landlords run to Rent Control more than tenants – Rent control

The Public Relations Officer of Rent Control Department, Mr Emmanuel Kporsu has disclosed that more landlords run to the Department for assistance than tenants.

“About 73 percent of cases before the Rent Control Department are from house owners who have various forms of issues with their tenants” he said.

According to Mr Kporsu the Rent Control Department handles about 18,000 cases a year and only few cases are referred to the court.

‘The few tenants that manage to file report at the Rent Control mostly bothers on the ill-treatment of the landlords and unfulfilled promises’ he added.

He was speaking on the topic “The Rights and Duties of Landlords and tenants” on TV XYZ show called My Lawyer My Counselor hosted by Daakyehene Ofosu Agyeman on Sundays at 7pm.

Mr Kporsu warn landlords to stop taking advance payment of more than 6 months which is illegal.

“It is a criminal offence and you can be fined to the tune of Gh 10 000 or jailed for a maximum of 2 years according to the rent law” he disclosed.
