Mills was God-fearing, devoted father and friend – Mahama

Former president John Mahama has eulogised his late boss, Prof JEA Mills, who passed on in 2012.

In his speech at the 9th wreath laying ceremony of the late president, HE Professor JEA Mills, Mr Mahama described him as a hero.

“Prof., as we all fondly called him, is our departed hero and inspiration who continues forever to live in our hearts and minds,” he stated.

“Nine years ago, even the heavens themselves displayed the ominous signs when the skies, which were previously bright, suddenly darkened as though about to rain. A gripping cold enveloped the whole nation.

“Yes, it was a Tuesday afternoon. Our nation was in shock when news came through confirming the unprecedented event of the death of our sitting President, Professor John Evans Atta Mills. It is a tragedy we all pray would never befall our nation ever again.”

Mahama said Mills’ family, nine years ago,  lost “a God-fearing, devoted father, brother and husband”

He continued, “our  country lost a priceless gem, a true servant leader; Africa lost an exemplary illustrious son, the NDC lost a torchbearer, and I lost not only my superior, but a friend and mentor.”

He went on to recount some great achievement of Mills within the short period he served the country in the highest office of the land.

“Although his Presidency was unexpectedly short-lived, his legacy and record remain unmatched in the annals of our nation’s history. I am honoured to have played a humble part as his Vice President and Head of the Economic Management Team,” he added.

The event was attended by national executives of the NDC, family members of the Mills family and other friends of the family.
