Minority is weak – McCarthy blasts NDC MPs over closure of Radio Gold, XYZ

Editor of the Hawk Newspaper Charles McCarthy has descended on the National Democratic Congress (NDC) MPs for not doing enough to get pro-opposition radio stations that were shut down in a Gestapo style in 2019 back on air.

Radio Gold and XYZ were closed down on May 9, 2019 for what the National Communication Authority described as authorization breaches.

For almost 3 years, the parties involved–the owners of the media outlets and the state– have not been able to bring finality to the matter.

Minority Leader in Parliament, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu.

Media advocacy group- the Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA) dragged the National Communications Authority (NCA) to court over the closure of XYZ and other radio stations in some parts of the country.

But Charles McCarthy who believes the ruling government has been able to render the minority powerless although they have the same representation in Parliament says the opposition is not serious.

Speaking on the Morning Update on TV XYZ, the journalist recalled how Communications Minister Ursula Owusu promised to settle the matter but has failed to deliver on her promise yet the Minority members have not been able to hold her accountable.

“The opposition is sleeping..Today is July [SIC] July is getting to an end isn’t it?…Ursula Owusu the Minister of Communication went to Parliament and told the Appointments Committee that in June some radio stations were going to gain their freedom; June has ended, we’ve not heard anything; July is going and you want me to take Parliament serious when they are not serious about things they tell us, the people? No!” he stated.

To him, if the Minority were not weak, they would have filed questions to pile pressure on the sector minister to honour her words rather than engaging in banters that will end nowhere.
