From tomorrow April 2,2021, withdrawal of money from your MTN wallet will require that you present a valid ID card to the agent for verification.
This policy is the Government of Ghana’s initiative to reduce criminal activities done through Momo transactions.
Earlier this year, telecoms giant MTN announced the No ID Card, No Access to MOMO services was to take effect from February 1st but that was deferred.
MTN is now ready to effect the new policy from April 2nd. According to the policy, all MoMo customers will be required to present valid ID cards before any MoMo cash-out or withdrawal.
These include one of the following; Ghana card, Driving License, Passport, Voter’s ID, Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) ID, and the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) card.
MTN MoMo has announced the policy starts effective April 2.
The news comes amidst concern about the non effectiveness of the new national ID Card recently issued by the Electoral Commission (EC).
It is public knowledge banks and other financial institutions are accepting the old voters ID card instead of the Ghana Card because the systems have still not been networked.
Again concerns have been raised about those who are yet to acquire the cards particularly Ghanaians in rural areas and how MTN intends to handle students and other persons who may otherwise have not been captured for any of the IDs recommended.
It is not yet clear how MTN and other service providers intend to address the potential challenge if the policy begins tomorrow.
