NPP MP, Hanson -Nortey fingered in Ghc¢ 22.5 million alleged insurance fraud

New Patriotic party’s (NPP) member of Parliament for Tema Central, Yves Hanson- -Nortey has been fingered in an insurance fraud that is said to have painfully cost the insurance firm, Star Assurance company limited, some whopping amount of Ghc¢22.5 million.

According to a writ sighted by at the Commercial Division of an Accra High Court, Mr. Hanson-Nortey his supposed APRX petroleum Ghana of using foul means to retrieve insurance bond from the insurance firm way back in 2018.

In the statement of claims, the plaintiff- Star Assurance Company limited adverted that in October 2018 it had issued a custom bond to the first defendant to bear for the cost of the latter had incurred on petroleum products it imported for distribution and sale to its customers, which later amounted to Gh¢10,000,000.00.

Due to the APRX petroleum Ghana’s inability to meet the condition of payment deadline after the issuance of the Bond, star Assurance became liable, being surcharged 120% of the value of the said bond thus for the plaintiff to pay the value of the Bond Gh¢10,000,000.00 in an addendum to 12,500,000.00 (120%) which in totality amount to Gh¢22,500,000.00

“Plaintiff says that the 1st Defendant applied to Ghana Revenue Authority for rescheduling of its indebtedness which said application was granted, however, 1st Defendant failed to abide by the terms of of the rescheduled payment agreement.

“Plaintiff says that it has been directed by Ghana Revenue Authority to pay the above-mentioned sum Gh¢22,500,000.00 forthwith” the statement indicated.

On the side of this development, the second Defendant Yves Hanson–Nortey, who is a shareholder and director of the first defendant company had put forward documents covering properties to serve as a security for the defendant’s indebtedness to the plaintiff. The documents showed according to the statement of claim were totally ingenuine.

It indicates: ” Plaintiff avers that in its attempt to perfect the proposed mortgage documents it realized that all the documents brought by 2nd defendant be relied on to execute a mortgage in favor of 1 defendant were procured by fraud.

Star Assurance is now in court to seek the following reliefs:

Recovery of the sum of Gh¢22,500,000.00 being cash to be given to the plaintiff to Ghana Revenue Authority as a result of 1st Defendant’s inability to pay its taxes and levies owed to Ghana Revenue Authority and the amount the defendant has failed or refused to pay in spite of ample and repeated Demands made thereafter.

It is again seeking interest on the said amount at the prevailing Commercial Bank rate to be paid on monthly basis in arrears from the 21st day of February 2021 to the date of final payment.

Star Assurance is also yearning the court for damages as well as costs, not excluding legal fees.

The writ was served on both 1st and 2nd defendants on Friday, September 23, 2021, through the finance Manager at APRX petroleum identified as Reynolds Sackey.

The matter is expected to be called for hearing when the court return from the legal recess.
