Speaker urges MPs to serve in the interest of Parliament

Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon Alban Bagbin has inaugurated an Eleven-member management committee of parliamentary friendship associations of the Eighth Parliament of the Fourth Republic.

The event was under the theme: Strengthening Parliamentary Dilplomacy; the Quest for Legislative Excellence.

The management committee of the parliamentary friendship association is one of two important management structures established to ensure that parliamentary friendship associations are formed and run to function effectively to realize their desired goals.

The committee oversees and manages the formation, operations, and functioning of parliamentary friendship associations.

The management committee comprises the Deputy Majority Leader as chairperson and Deputy Minority Leader as Vice-chairperson.

The others are the first deputy majority chief whip, the first deputy minority whip, the chairperson of the foreign affairs committee, the ranking member of the foreign affairs committee, two members of the majority caucus appointed by the majority leader and a member from the minority caucus appointed by the minority leader.

Members of the 8th Parliament inaugurated nine parliamentarians, Hon. Alexander Affenyo-Markin as chairperson, James Klutse Avedzi as Vice-Chairperson.

The members are Madam Lydia Seyram Alhassan, Ahmed Ibrahim, Bryan Acheampong, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, O. B Amoah, Dr. Emmanuel Marfo, and Richard Acheampong.

The members were nominated by both Majority and Minority Leaders, with two additional members from parliamentary staff.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, urged the Members of Parliament to acquaint themselves with practices of other legislatures in order to best serve the interest of Ghana’s Parliament and their constituents.

According to him, friendships with other Legislators of the world will also help deepen members’ debate on the floor of Parliament.

The Chairman of the committee, Alexander Afenyo Markin, on behalf of members expressed their readiness to work in fulfillment of their mandate.
