The Rent Control Department says it is wrong for any house owner to call him or herself landlord or landlady until a room has been rented out.
According to the Public Relations Officer of Rent Control Department, Mr Emmanuel Kporsu, you are only a house owner or land developer for building a house being occupied by yourself or your family alone.
“The fact that you have built a house doesn’t make you an automatic landlord or landlady but you can only claim that title if only you give room out to a tenant” he said.
Mr Kporsu made this revelations when he was speaking on TV XYZ educative program dubbed My Lawyer My Counselor hosted by the Award winning broadcast journalist, Daakyehene Ofosu Agyeman on Sunday evenings from 7pm – 8pm.
According to Mr Kporsu, If there’s no exchange of money through renting then the house owner cannot be referred to as landlord or landlady.
He was speaking on the topic “Rights and Duties of Landlords and tenants” and said there are responsibilities for both parties to play to live in peace.
Mr Kporsu used the opportunity to advise tenants to demand for assessment certificate and tenancy agreement signed by both parties.
He therefore advised the general public to seek redress at the rent control when they have issues concerning rent.
