Deputy Youth Organizer for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Edem Agbana has said the flagbearer of the party, former president John Mahama is a peaceful person who will not alow his supporters to protest in a violent way as the party seeks justice.
He asked critics to stop “painting John Dramani Mahama black” for the series of ongoing protests across the country following the refusal of the party to accept the 2020 presidential elections results.
After the declaration of the results for NPP’s Nana Akufo-Addo on December 9,2020, the NDC asked its members to reject the outcome of the presidential polls, calling it “flawed”.
Mr Mahama in an interview with the VOA said the 2020 polls is the most incompetent elections Ghana has had since the inception of democracy in the fourth republic, adding that the EC subverted the will of the people in the polls which earned him over 6 million votes.
Edem Agbana believes the party took the right decision to reject the results and said had it not been the calm nature of their leader, the NDC supporters would have been more radical in their protests because they had come to realize the Chair of the Electoral Commission (EC), Jean Mensa and her deputies manipulated the presidential and parliamentary results in favour of the incumbent government.
Speaking on Dwaboase on Power 97.9 FM, the youth activist noted that Mr Mahama as a president of the country conceded defeat and congratulated Nana Akufo-Addo before the EC announced the certified results of the 2016 general elections.
“Sometimes, I ask myself what manner of man is this who loves Ghana to the extend of puting the interest of Ghanaians first despite the number of times people have cheated him. And that is the person of John Mahama,” Agbana told sit-in host Piesie Okrah. “It is because of him [Mahama] that is why there is peace in Ghana.”
He added, “It is the calmness position of Mr Mahama that is why the NDC supporters are not causing violence and destroying properties.”
He averred that the NDC is a peaceful party that is seeking justice with its series of protests to get the EC Boss to do the right thing by auditing the results and rectify the descripancies that is waning the credibility of the electoral management body and added, “We are a peaceful party. we have informed our supporters to protest peacefully. ”
Agbana also rubbished claims by the Police that the NDC members who massed up at the EC headquarters pelted stones at police officials thus turning the protest a violent one.
“Unfortunately on the part of this government, the only thing our supporters who are having a peaceful protest are holding are placards and nobody pelted stones at the security but it was a reaction from a few,” he added “As I’m talking now, some of our supporters are detained at the hospital.”
He went on and condemned the Police for abusing the NDC members saying “If you alleged that our supporters burnt tyres hence you want to quench the fire and you want them to stop, you know the leadership. We the leadership were there, speak to us we are in a democracy for Christ sake. Let’s make commitment to the peace process.”
