A security expert, Sani Adib has urged the Police hierarchy to thread cautiously in order not to mainstream the activities of vigilante groups in the country.
There have been calls by members of the public for vigilante groups to be banned owing to their destructive activities in the country. The most recent of such incidences occurred in the Ashanti Region where members of the Delta Force attacked the Member of Parliament for Tafo Pankrono, Anthony Akoto Osei during a meeting with regional party executives.
The Police service, as part of plans to check against some of these menace says it is rolling out measures to regularize the activities of vigilante groups where members of these groups would be recruited into security firms.
But Mr. Adib who spoke on Radio XYZ’ morning show, “Ete Sen” on Wednesday, October 17 contends that, there is the need to identify the modus operandi of these groups so as not to give them more power to emerge. “There is the need for us to be extremely careful in the way we do it because if care is not taken, we will be legitimizing vigilantism” he observed.
He also proposed subjecting members of these groups to security checks so as to weed out those with negative backgrounds.
In his view “It will be completely naive to think by recruiting them into security firms and companies, we will be dealing with them……….we may be shooting ourselves in the foot.”
