Trumpeted achievements and electoral reforms proposals of EC bogus- NDC

The National Democratic Congress NDC has described the recent electoral reforms proposals and achievements touted by the Electoral Commission (EC) in the 2020 general elections as bogus.

NDC Director of Elections, Elvis Afriyie Ankrah who addressed the press Thursday afternoon dubbed ‘accessing the so called achievements and Electoral reform proposals of the Electoral commission’ pointed to a lot of lapses that characterized the 2020 elections and indicated that cannot be a success to be celebrated.

Mr Ankrah observed that Ghana had witnessed free, fair and transparent elections since the epoch of the former EC Boss, Dr Afari Gyan but the arrogance posturing of Deputy EC Boss Dr Bossman Asare and the insensitive nature of Jean Mensah prior to the 2020 elections has ruined the credibility of the electoral management body.

“If not over pomposity how can the EC chairperson say to Mr Johnson Aseidu Nkestia to stop laughing when she (Jean Mensah) is talking at IPAC meeting?”

Mr Ankrah Said, the NDC recently boycotted the IPAC meeting on the grounds that the leadership of the Electoral Commission that supervised the total manipulation and the rigging of the 2020 general elections can’t engage the NDC in such meeting.

To this end, he said the EC is bent on doing the bidding of the NPP whether NDC attends the IPAC meeting or not.

“How can you celebrate the success of 2020 elections that resorted to numerous violence against innocent people at the verge of 9 people losing their lives?” the former Youth and Sports Minister quizzed.

Mr Ankrah made it clear that, the EC cannot in anyway celebrate electoral success when most of the officials it recruited during the 2020 December elections have still not been paid.

“Ghana goes into the December 7 polls , all attempts by presiding officers and others to get their remuneration have proved futile” he said.

Afriyie Ankrah further stressed that the EC’s proposal to end 2024 polls at 3pm is a clear indication that they want to disenfranchise most potential voters in the strongholds of the National Democratic Congress NDC.

” Since 1992 the closing of polls had been 5pm and this has been in the good book of every Electoral Commissioner so the Jean Mensah-led EC proposing to end 2024 elections at 3pm will ignite tension and confusion in the country” he posited.

“If we can recall the EC in the 2020 elections made the whole country understand that, the results will be announced within 24 hours but we are all aware of what happened. She couldn’t acted on this timeline and she came out to declare results painted with errors”

Mr Ankrah told the media that , closing polls at 3pm will not favor those in the villages, stressing  “Most villagers go to farm for food stuffs in the morning for their survival so such time will pile pressure and confusion on them.”

Mr Ankrah further cautioned the EC to stick to the principles of credibility, integrity and impartiality so as to conduct free and fair election in future because the discerning Ghanaian will not succumb to their bias and rigging attempt in the next elections.
