Twitter lays off African staff days after opening Ghana office.
Twitter has sacked workers in its African office in Ghana one year after Twitter came to Africa.
The layoff also comes three days after Twitter workers in Ghana officially opened physical office in Accra. The Ghana office was to serve as the headquarters of the company in Africa.
The workers were working remotely for about a year. On Friday morning, they were logged out of their email accounts and their work laptops stopped working, they later received message in their personal email account that they have been terminated.
“The company is reorganizing its operations as a result of a need to reduce costs. It is with regret that we’re writing to inform you that your employment is terminating as a result of this exercise,” the email told Twitter Africa staff.
According to reports, employees will receive full payment until 4th December but in that time they are not allowed to communicate with other staff, customers and clients but they are to remain available at twitters disposal in case they need to have a proper handover.
According to some of the employees in Ghana, the email did not mention them by name, it just said “see attached.”
Even though Elon Musk said everybody who got fired will get at least three months serve above the law, that will be in the US but those in the African office did not receive any next step, which some lawyers in Ghana are pointing it out that it could be a violation of Ghanaian employment law.
