Vociferous Broadcast Journalist Okatakyie Afrifa-Mensah has chastised the Akufo-Addo-led administration for refusing to give credit to the erstwhile National Democratic Congress (NDC) government for initiating the Pokuase interchange project.
Speaking to Prince Minkah on XYZ Tonight Monday, the Journalist who is affectionately called ‘Youth President’ indicated the Mahama administration deserves credit for initiating the project.
“The Pokuase interchange is a Mahama project and the NPP must give him credit for initiating the project…It was Mahama that secured funding for the Pokuase and Tema interchanges,” he stressed.
To him, although the Akufo-Addo administration deserves commendation for continuing the important project it was, however, inappropriate for President Akufo-Addo to be silent on Mahama’s efforts on the day he opened the project to traffic.
The 4 tier interchange was officially opened to traffic on Friday, July 9,2021 to link Pokuase Junction to Kumasi, Awoshie, Kwabenya and Accra.
President Akufo-Addo, who commissioned the inherited project, rather decided to throw jabs at his predecessor.
According to the President, his government is building three interchanges with an amount of $289 million, while the erstwhile Mahama administration built only one interchange with almost the same amount.
“It is important to put on record that the original contract design [for the Pokuase interchange] was for a three-tier interchange, however through efficient management by my government the interchange was modified to a four-tier interchange within the same contract sum.”
But Okatakyie believes the NPP must give the Mahama administration some credit so future governments could feel free to initiate projects even when they know its completion will transcend their tenure of office.
The NDC has claimed credit for the project, stating that the Mahama administration secured funding for the almost $95 million project.
For instance, a former Deputy Communication Minister, Felix Kwakye Ofosu stated categorically that the Pokuase Interchange is a brainchild of the Mahama administration.
“Let me put on record that President Akufo-Addo knows nothing about the Pokuase Interchange; and the interchange doesn’t know President Akufo-Addo…It is a project that was initiated by the Mahama administration,” Kwakye Ofosu told Mugabe Maase on Inside Politics on Power FM Friday.
Ofosu, a special aide to former president Mahama, went on and explained that the erstwhile Mahama administration secured funding from the African Development Bank for the interchange to be constructed so the claim by the President cannot be true.
“November 3, 2016 was when the funds were secured. Parliament approved the loan and we begun procurement processes only for us to lose the 2016 elections,” Kwakye Ofosu asserted “the loan used for its construction was added to the loans of the Mahama administration.”
He added, “The reason he [President Akufo-Addo ] is claiming glory for the interchange is because he has not done anything meaningful in the country, ” he jabbed ” if he had done something meaningful to be proud about, he would not be claiming a project funded for by his predecessor.”
