A former National Coordinator of the Nasara Club of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Abubakar Suleman, also known as ‘Laku Laku’ has kicked against wasting taxpayers’ money on the hiring of luxurious private jets for President Akufo-Addo’s foreign trips.
Speaking on Tonton Sansan on TV XYZ, the NPP activist indicate that he loves President Akufo-Addo whom he described as a “good man”, he, however, was taken aback when news broke that the president has been travelling with expensive jets during his recent foreign trips.
“You cannot break the 8 when we are hiring private jets,” he told host Kwame Minkah in Akan, arguing that a country cannot do that when there is a functioning presidential jet.
Laku Laku, as he is affectionately called, cautioned the handlers of the president to listen to the cry of the Ghanaian citizens and work in a way that does not cause public disaffection for President Akufo-Addo.
His comment comes after the country has been debating about why the government would hire jets for foreign travels when the NPP government wants to break the 8 year jinx.
Private Jet Trips
President Akufo-Addo has come under severe criticism after MP for North Tongu, Samuel Ablakwa disclosed the amount the government spent on his foreign trips in May.
Ablakwa in a statement alleged that President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo spent a whopping Ghc2.8m on his recent trips to France and Johannesburg, after renting an aircraft that cost the Ghanaian taxpayer £15,000 every hour.
In his estimation, Ablakwa said the Akufo-Addo left Accra for Paris on the 16th of May. and then to Paris where he proceeded to Johannesburg before returning to Accra on the 25th May 2021.
He said the 23 hours president spent on the luxury jet accumulated a total of £345,000. He went on to calculate the amount spent at the current exchange rate which he said amounted to GHS2,828,432.80.
Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta who was asked to account for the foreign trips of the president on the private jets referred the matter to the Minister for National Security for the details.
Security experts have said the details could be concealed once the ministry takes over the matter since national security matters cannot be accounted for before the country, raising eyebrows.
NDC Lawyer Jabs President
A lawyer belonging to the NDC Mr Godwin Edudzi Tameklo has accused the presidency of spending some GHS10million of taxpayers’ money on private jets for the foreign trips of President Nana Akufo-Addo within the past three months alone.
Mr Tameklo says the president is living in luxury while the masses wallow in abject poverty.
The president, in his view, is living like an Arabian king in his second term.
He accused the president of pugging his ears with cotton buds so he would not hear the outrage of the masses as far as his private jet rentals are concerned.
“As the president continues to rent these expensive private jets, the salaries of public sector workers have been increased by a paltry four percent”, Mr Tameklo said on Accra-based Okay FM.
He added, that people now jokingly refer to public sector workers as ‘Article four percent officeholders’ because their salaries were increased by only 4%.
In his view, while Ghanaians have tightened their belt in the wake of the economic downturn instanced by the COVID-19 pandemic, the president is bathing in the air at a cost of 14,000 dollars an hour.
