The Ghana Police Service has said it would be unable to provide security for a three-day demonstration to be organised by some members of the #FixTheCountry movement.
The street protest which is against hardship, corruption and impunity begins on June 4, 2022.
The group including two broadcasters – Captain Godsbrain Smart, Okatakyie Afrifa – and conveners of the #FixTheCountry, Oliver Barker-Vormawor and Benjamin Darko.
But the Police in a statement said the demo has the potential to result in a breach of public order and public safety.
The group had written to the Accra regional Police Command to allow them to demonstrate with their own private security.
The individuals including broadcasters also asked the Police to allow demonstrators carry their own registered weapons to the march to protect themselves.
“We will bring our own security company to provide protection to demonstrators,” the group said in their statement.
They added that all weapons held by the demonstrators or contracted security personnel “will be for personal protection only; and all weapons will be duly permitted in accordance with the Arms and Ammunitions Act, 1972 (NRCD 9) e).”
The protest was expected to gather at Circle.
But a private legal practitioner has said attending demonstration with weapons is illegal.
“Oliver and his group will be heading straight to jail when they carry weapons”, Kpebu said on Joy FM.
