President John Mahama has urged African leaders to prioritize investments in energy sufficiency as a foundation for sustainable development across the continent.
Speaking at the opening session of the 2025 Africa Oil Week in Accra on Tuesday, September 16, 2025, President Mahama emphasized that Africa’s growing youth population presents both an opportunity and a responsibility.
“Energy sufficiency is key to Africa’s development. With Africa as the youngest growing population, it is imperative that we take advantage of this and invest in our youth,” he said.
He described the annual gathering as a symbol of unity and a platform for African-led progress.
“This extraordinary gathering of leaders, companies, governments, and investors is proof that our industry is strongest when we work together. We stand for more growth, more success, and a shared prosperity for Africa. AOW:Energy is not only a platform to attract investment but also a commitment to an African-led agenda, designed to secure our resources, develop our economies, and power our future,” he stated.
President Mahama stressed that Africa must take ownership of its resources and its destiny.
He pointed out that while the continent holds nearly 10% of the world’s proven oil reserves, more than 600 million Africans still lack access to electricity.
Outlining Ghana’s vision, he said the country is determined to transform into a regional petroleum hub through strategic investments in gas infrastructure, downstream development, and a balanced energy transition. “Let this be the start of a new chapter.
Together with the Ministry, the Presidency, our agencies, and all partners, we look forward to an even bigger AOW:Energy 2026.
Together, we will continue to showcase Africa’s upstream story and build a future of pride, strength, and unity,” he added.
