600+ constitutional reform proposals received by committee; NDC, NPP yet to make submissions

Ghana’s Constitutional Review Committee (CRC) has been flooded with public input over 600 reform proposals so far as citizens, academics, and civil society groups rally around the rare opportunity to reshape the 1992 Constitution.

From online submissions to handwritten letters, Ghanaians are speaking up about executive powers, judicial independence, decentralization, and more.

But there’s a conspicuous silence from two key players: the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Dr. Rainer Akumperigya, the CRC’s Secretary, voiced his concern:

“We are quite surprised the NDC and NPP have not made submissions yet. Their input is critical to a holistic reform process.”

Launched by President John Dramani Mahama in February 2025, the CRC has just six months to gather views and recommend constitutional amendments.

The urgency is clear, and so is the appetite for change. But the absence of Ghana’s two dominant political parties is casting a shadow over what could be a pivotal moment for the country’s democracy.

Observers fear that without bipartisan engagement; any proposals may lack the political momentum needed for actual implementation.

The CRC is still accepting submissions. Ghanaians can email their views to submissions@constitutionreviewgh.org or drop off hard copies at the committee’s office at the Office of the President annex at Ridge, Accra.

In a time when trust in institutions often wavers, the strong public response suggests that many Ghanaians still believe in the power of reform if only the political class is willing to meet them halfway.
