Dr. John Kissi, the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Hydrological Authority, says the Authority needs $5 billion to effectively combat the country’s ongoing flood issues.
He told the Assurances Committee in Parliament on August 28 that the situation was critical and needs a swift government intervention.
“In 2023, we were allocated GHS 92 million under the National Flood Control Programme. However, based on our assessment, we estimate that we need about $5 billion to comprehensively address the flood waste challenges we face,” said Dr Kissi.
Chairman of the committee, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, reacting to the revelation said their budget allocation was “a drop in the ocean”
The proposed funding is intended for a wide-ranging flood risk management strategy across all regions of Ghana. Dr. Kissi stressed that without this significant financial investment, many areas will continue to suffer from devastating floods.“
The need for such a large-scale investment underscores the severity of the flooding problem, which has been causing property damage and loss of life across the nation.
The Authority’s call for increased funding highlights the necessity for an expanded and effective approach to flood management.
