Asantehene endorses GoldBod’s drive to maximize Ghana’s mineral value

Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II has endorsed the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) and its CEO, Sammy Gyamfi, on June 2, 2025, for their leadership in maximizing Ghana’s mineral wealth.

Speaking at the Mining in Motion Summit in Accra, the Asantehene emphasized the importance of proactive strategies over reactive measures in the mining sector.

He praised Gyamfi’s efforts in advocating for stronger institutions, value addition, and equitable returns from the gold industry, stating, “Sammy, I thank you very much on this one.”

The Asantehene highlighted that Ghana’s challenge lies not in the lack of resources but in the inability to fully capitalize on them in the global market.

He pointed out that illicit mining distracts from the real issue of maximizing benefits from the country’s mineral heritage.

Under Gyamfi’s leadership, GoldBod has emerged as a proponent of responsible mining, transparent governance, and Ghanaian ownership of strategic mineral assets.

This endorsement aligns with President John Mahama’s vision for GoldBod, which aims to reform Ghana’s gold mining sector.

Mahama announced plans for a “track and trade” system to ensure environmentally sustainable and ethically sourced gold exports.

He also revealed that Ghana earned $2.7 billion in gold export revenues through the Precious Minerals Marketing Company (PMMC) and GoldBod between January and April 2025, with expectations for this figure to rise as reforms continue.

The Asantehene’s support signals growing traditional leadership backing for reforms aimed at maximizing national benefits from Ghana’s natural resources.

He reiterated the need for systemic reforms that elevate Ghana’s position in the global mineral value chain, stating, “Through the mining industry, and gold in particular, we have the opportunity to rewrite our story but only if we take ourselves seriously.”
