Akwatia by-election: poll puts NDC’s Bediako ahead with 53%

A new survey by Global InfoAnalytics projects that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate, Bernard Bediako, is on course to win the Akwatia by-election on Tuesday, September 2, 2025.

The poll, conducted between August 27 and 28 with a sample of 2,050 registered voters, places Bediako at 53%, ahead of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) candidate, Solomon K. Asumadu, who polled 47%.

The by-election was triggered by the sudden death of NPP MP Ernest Kumi on July 7, and has since attracted national attention.

Akwatia, a traditional swing seat, has alternated between the NPP and NDC over the past two decades, making the contest a bellwether for the country’s political climate ahead of the 2028 general elections.

Global InfoAnalytics noted that voter choices are being shaped not only by party loyalty but also by concerns over unemployment, economic hardship, and poor access to social amenities issues that have sharpened campaign debates and could affect turnout.

The research firm, however, cautioned that undecided voters remain a key factor and could either cement Bediako’s lead or narrow the race in favour of the NPP.

Meanwhile, security agencies have pledged heavy deployment in Akwatia to ensure a peaceful exercise, given past incidents of electoral violence.
